Managing the Lesson

This booklet helps teachers identify areas for development and provide ways to improve their knowledge and develop the skills they need in and out of the classroom. Teacher educators can use the materials with developing teachers to help assess and address their learning needs.

Teachers can explore lesson management skills, including:
  • how to use the classroom space and classroom equipment
  • putting learners into different groups
  • giving clear instructions and checking that learners have understood

The booklet also includes how to manage learner behaviour and how to respond to what’s happening in the classroom by making small changes to the lesson plan. Finally, teachers are encouraged to think about decisions after the lesson and use that experience to improve ideas and techniques for future lessons.

Happy birthday Mr. Dickens!

Charles Dickens was born on February 7th in 1812 in Portsmouth. He left school to work in a factory when he was just a child. Despite his lack of formal education, he began his literary career as a journalist and became the greatest novelist of the Victorian period.

An Introduction to Design Thinking

Design thinking refers to the cognitive, strategic and practical processes by which design concepts (proposals for new products, buildings, machines, etc.) are developed by designers and/or design teams.

Many of the key concepts and aspects of design thinking have been identified through studies, across different design domains, of design cognition and design activity in both laboratory and natural contexts. Currently there is a growing interest towards Design Thinking as applied in education.

This guide is an introduction to Design Thinking provided by the Institute of Design at Stanford:
