NotebookLM, a versatile assistant for ESL teachers

NotebookLM offers English-language teachers a powerful and flexible tool for supporting students who are learning English as a foreign language.

By allowing teachers to upload texts, articles, worksheets, or classroom materials, the platform automatically generates explanations, summaries, vocabulary lists, and comprehension questions tailored to the learners’ level. This helps teachers create personalised resources quickly and adapt authentic materials for different groups. NotebookLM also enables students to explore the content interactively, asking questions in real time and receiving clear, contextualised answers that reinforce understanding.

For teachers, it becomes an efficient assistant for preparing lessons, designing activities, and differentiating instruction, while for learners it creates a more engaging environment where they can practise reading, listening, and speaking skills with guidance. In essence, NotebookLM enhances both teaching and learning by making high-quality language support accessible, dynamic, and easy to integrate into everyday classroom practice.

Getting started with NotebookLM is simple. After accessing the platform with a Google account, teachers can create a new “notebook” and upload the materials they want to work with—PDFs, Google Docs, web pages, or text files. Once the sources are added, NotebookLM automatically analyses them and becomes ready to answer questions or generate teaching resources based on the content. Teachers can then ask the tool to produce vocabulary exercises, reading-comprehension tasks, grammar explanations, or simplified versions of difficult texts. They can also share notebooks with students or colleagues, making it easy to organise collaborative learning. With just a few minutes of setup, English teachers gain a versatile assistant that supports lesson planning, scaffolding, and student autonomy.

Semantris. Engage in AI-powered word association games

Play word association games with the help of semantic search. When you provide a clue, the AI examines all the words in play and selects the ones it believes are most closely related. Since the AI was trained on diverse conversational text, it can make various types of associations.

In Semantris' Arcade mode, the AI organizes the list, placing the most related words at the bottom. For instance, in the example given, it suggests that "Moon" is a more fitting response to "Sun" than "Teacher."

Semantris operates similarly to other word association games, where a person offers clues to assist their teammate in guessing the correct words. The unique aspect is that, in Semantris, you provide hints to an AI. As the AI might respond in unexpected ways, it's beneficial to experiment with different types of clues to understand its thought process and achieve the highest scores. Try using slang, technical terms, pop culture references, synonyms, antonyms, and even complete sentences.

Verse by Verse

Verse by Verse (a project from Google) is an experimental AI-powered muse that helps you compose poetry inspired by classic American poets.

Each poet will try to offer suggestions that they think would best continue a poem in the style of that given poet. As such, try working with different poets to see whose style best meshes with your own.  Select the poets who inspire you and write your own first line of a poem.

Poems can be downloaded as images.

An Ocean of Books

An Ocean of Books is a big map of a sea of literature where each island represents a single author (there are more than 113,000), and each city represents a book.

The distance among the authors has been calculated based on their complex relationship thanks to a machine learning technique called Uniform Manifold Approximation and Projection (UMAP).

An island was assigned to each author, matching the island size with the author’s presence on the web

Smarty Pins

Smarty Pins is a browser-based game developed by Google that test your knowledge on geography across a number of categories: arts & culture, science, sports & games, entertainment and history & current events. You have to answer by placing a pin on a map.

You start each game with a bank of 1,000 miles/ 1,609 kilometres. You can lose miles/ kilometres for answering incorrectly and or taking too long to answer. The game subtracts the number of miles/ kilometres you're off by for each answer.. Fast, correct answers earn extra miles/ kilometres to keep the player’s journey going longer. When your bank hits zero, it is game over.

You can share your scores via Twitter, Facebook or Google+.
