Book Club: A Song of Hope to foster ESL, Creativity, and Global Citizenship through Literature

Ever feel like getting students excited about reading in a second language is an uphill battle? That’s why the eTwinning project "Book Club: A Song of Hope" really caught my eye.

Instead of treating literature like just another set of vocabulary lists and comprehension questions, it turns a standard reading lesson into a space where kids actually talk to each other across borders. The setup is simple, but smart: students read together, use basic digital tools to share their thoughts, and connect with peers from other countries to react to the same story.

What works so well here is that English becomes the tool to share an opinion, not just a subject to get graded on. Kids practice their speaking and writing because they actually have something to say, while picking up subtle lessons in empathy and how people from different cultures view the same text.

Hooking students on classical mythology via The Odyssey

With Christopher Nolan's epic film adaptation of The Odyssey capturing audiences, ancient Greek mythology is having a major cultural moment in classrooms. While a cinematic spectacle is a great way to spark curiosity, students still need accessible text resources to help them process Homer’s complex narrative structure, non-linear timeline, and vast cast of characters.

The BBC Bitesize guide to Geraldine McCaughrean’s adaptation of The Odyssey offers an ideal bridge between Hollywood hype and classroom literacy.

Reading Maps

Reading Maps is an interactive website that takes the fictional and real-life journeys from famous books and films and plots them onto a digital map of the real world. By bridging the gap between narrative storytelling and actual geography, the platform maps out the literal tracks, roads, rivers, and sea routes taken by iconic characters and historical figures. Users can filter through a massive database of classics, contemporary novels, and cinema—ranging from Homer’s The Odyssey and Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein to modern pop culture staples like Harry Potter and The Da Vinci Code—to visually track exactly where these stories take place on our planet.

For educators, Reading Maps is a brilliant cross-curricular utility that brings literature, history, and geography together in a visual format. In an English or literature classroom, it serves as a powerful engagement tool that transforms abstract reading assignments into tangible, spatial adventures, helping students conceptualize the grueling scope of a journey. This spatial visualization is especially beneficial for visual learners and struggling readers who find it difficult to track complex settings or shifting locations solely through text. Furthermore, geography and history teachers can use the site to create highly interactive lessons, encouraging students to compare a character's fictional route against real-world topographies, historical borders, or climate zones.

Happy birthday Mr. Dickens!

Charles Dickens was born on February 7th in 1812 in Portsmouth. He left school to work in a factory when he was just a child. Despite his lack of formal education, he began his literary career as a journalist and became the greatest novelist of the Victorian period.

Remembering him on his birthday, we have compiled a list of interesting resources about Dickens and his works:

Archive of Recorded Poetry and Literature

The Archive of Recorded Poetry and Literature at the Library of Congress dates back to 1943. It contains nearly two thousand recordings—of poets and prose writers participating in literary events at the Library’s Capitol Hill campus as well as sessions at the Library’s Recording Laboratory.

Most of these recordings are captured on magnetic tape reels, and only accessible at the Library itself. In digitizing the archive and presenting it online, the Library hopes to greatly broaden its use and value.
