Crash Course

Crash Course is an educational YouTube channel started by Hank and John Green, two brothers who provide some excellent video explanations and tutorials on a variety of topics related to World and US History, Biology, Literature, Ecology and Chemistry. 

Crash Course launched a preview on December 2, 2011. As of January 25, 2015, the channel has earned over 2.6 million subscribers and over 200 million video views.

World Library of Science

The World Library of Science (WLoS) is a free online resource developed as a partnership between UNESCO and Macmillan Science and Education. It offers quality Nature Education content in short eBooks and articles, serving a mission to equalize access to high quality resources for science education for all communities across the globe. All offerings are digital. 

WLoS is for teachers, students and any curious person. As the content is all free, anyone can access the library or create a classroom or discussion space. Teaching faculty (or anyone) can create online reading lists to share with their students, and students (or anyone) can browse the Library resources or search for others in the WLoS social network who share their interests. 

Registration is free but requires an email address. 

Future plans involve expansoion of life and physical science subjects, as well as a translation of resources into multiple languages.

Science Museum (London) Teaching Resources

The Science Museum is a major museum on Exhibition Road in South Kensington, London. Opened in 1857, today constitutes one of the city's major tourist attractions. In fact, it is well worth a visit. Unfortunately it is not always possible. However, on its webpage a very interesting bank of free online resources is available for teachers and students.

You can select an age, choose a subject, and then a topic from the list or browse by the following categories:

- Hands-on activities and fun challenges.
- Short videos to use in your teaching.
- Online games and websites to motivate and engage students.
- Techniques and demos to use in your teaching.

English-at-home.com is a very interesting resource in order to learn English grammar, vocabulary and speaking with games, free lessons & more. A number of sections are available: Speaking, Grammar, Vocabulary & Idioms, Reading, Real Life English, Lessons, Games and Quizzes and a free English Course.

Since its launch in 1999, more than 350,000 visitors a month come to the site to learn English, generating more than 700,000 monthly page views.

The Noun Project

The Noun Project is a website launched in 2010 that aggregates and catalogs symbols that are created and uploaded by graphic designers around the world. Based in Los Angeles, the project functions both as a resource for people in search of typographic symbols and a design history of the genre.


The Noun Project’s mission is to share the world’s visual language. They collect and organize all the symbols that form languages into one easy-to-use online library that can be accessed by anyone. All the symbols on this site are completely free to download, and can be used for many different purposes, including presentations, vocabulary flashcards, etc.

Whyville

Whyville is a virtual world with over 100 games and constructive educational activities covering a wide range of subjects which helps children play and have fun while learning. 

It can also help teachers promote socially responsible behavior in an engaging and safe collaborative gaming environment. Membership is free.

Whyville works with such institutions as NASA, the Getty Museum, the School Nutrition Association, and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution to bring the educational content to its citizens.

Saint Patrick

Known as the Apostle of Ireland, Saint Patrick is the primary patron saint of Ireland. Saint Patrick's Day, or the Feast of Saint Patrick is a cultural and religious celebration occurring annually on 17 March.

St. Patrick features in many stories in the Irish oral tradition and there are many customs connected with his feast day. There are also many educational resources to learn more about him and about Irish culture.

Real World Math

Real World Math is a resource site consisting of a collection of free math activities for Google Earth.

Real World Math has been designed for students and educators.Teachers have access to lesson write ups and additional material to integrate these activities effectively and students will find downloads for over 30 activities, videos, and instructional tutorials for Google Earth & SketchUp.

If you are interested in a student-centered and task-oriented approach to mathematics that embraces active learning and project-based activities, this resource is highly recommended.

I Think It's a Monster. Nuevo libro de Daniel Martínez Cremades

Daniel Martínez Cremades, maestro especialista en inglés y colaborador asiduo del CEFIRE de Elda desde hace tiempo, nos anuncia su nueva obra I Think It's a Monster ilustrada por Francisco Javier García Hernández y publicada por ECU.

En esta ocasión, Óscar, el protagonista de la historia sufre una noche de insomnio obsesionado por mirada de alguien o algo que lo espía en su habitación.

La obra está orientada a estudiantes de Primaria de inglés como lengua extranjera y en la práctica del presente y de vocabulario significativo. Puede resultar útil para el profesorado que desee realizar una lectura graduada con su clase a partir de la cual desarrollar actividades de refuerzo y evaluación, que también se proporcionan al final de esta publicación.

BBC School Radio

BBC School Radio is the audio division of BBC Schools, the educational division of the BBC. 

It offers audio and video teaching resources for KS1 and KS2 primary school curriculum subjects including teacher's notes for lesson plans available online via the website for most series and simple to print or download as PDF files. Its content is divided into 8 subjects: Early Learning, History, PSHE- Citizenship, Mathematics, Collective Worship, Music, Dance and English.

Vocapic

Aunque no se trata de una herramienta exclusivamente dedicada al aprendizaje de inglés, por su utilidad para la adquisición y repaso de vocabulario orientado sobre todo a un público infantil, recogemos en este blog un proyecto muy recomendable denominado Vocapic.

Vocapic es un libro de imágenes en forma de preguntas destinado al apendizaje de vocabulario básico (hoy en día 1.000 palabras repartidas en 35 categorías, para idiomas como el inglés, el español y el francés, aunque se avanza la introducción de otras lenguas como el alemán, el árabe o el ruso)

Se trata de un recurso muy flexible que para su uso no requiere registro, aunque este pueda convenir para un seguimiento de la actividad propia más ajustado.

Peep and the Big Wide World

The animated series Peep and the Big Wide World are devoted to teach science to preschoolers. Visual humor, charming plotlines and lovable characters are used for this purpose for kids aged 3 to 5 years.

The PEEP science curriculum invites preschoolers to actively investigate their world by exploring water, sound, plants, color, shadows, and ramps (movement).

PEEP also offers video-based professional development for preschool educators on the topics of Science Talk, Learning Environments, Individualized Instruction, and Documentation and Reflection.

Count Me In Too

Count Me In Too is an Australian program developed to support the effective teaching of mathematics in years K-6. The program melds findings from research about how children learn mathematics, with research on effective professional development.

Count Me In Too uses a team-based approach to professional development with a focus on practice in the classroom. It started with a sole focus on number learning, but it has expanded into other aspects of mathematics learning, such as measurement and geometry.

Included in the program there are sections for teachers, parents and children.

Each year on February 14th many people around the world celebrate St. Valentine's Day. It began as a liturgical celebration but now the day is associated with romantic love and people exchange cards, flowers, gifts... with their special valentine.

Getty Publications Virtual Library

Interested in Art and English? This resource can be good news for you and for your students.

In 2014, Getty Publications launched its Virtual Library with more than 250 titles spanning its forty-year publishing history. Titles are searchable by title, author, and keyword and include full descriptions, tables of contents, links to read online, to purchase the print book, to find in a library, or to download the complete PDF for free for personal use. 

Only those titles that could be offered in their entirety were included in the initial launch of the Virtual Library. More will be added as they can be made available.
