Met Éireann’s Primary School Resources page

Resources for parents, teachers and children that have been designed for use in primary schools. They aim to provide a basic introduction to the weather and weather-related topics for primary school students.

The resources, presented as fact sheets, quizzes, lesson plans and experiments, are designed to encourage primary students to engage in active learning though an exploration and investigation of basic meteorological principles.

They are grouped together under these categories.

  • Younger Primary Students: this section offers simple descriptions of common weather facts, e.g. sunshine, rainfall, wind, temperature.
  • Older Primary Students: this section provides more in-depth information on weather-related topics and introduces more specific skills such as reading weather charts and cloud recognition.
  • Lessons Plans: this section is designed primarily for use by teachers and the lesson plans can be adapted to suit either younger or older primary school students.

Playlist for Life

Founded in 2013 by Sally Magnusson, the vision of Playlist for Life is that every person with dementia should have access to a unique personalised playlist and everyone who loves and cares for them should know how to use it to make living with the condition easier and happier.

Their resources page is full of free materials to help people at each stage of their playlist journey, whether they are making a personalised playlist for themselves or helping someone to make theirs.

Playlist for Life can also be a useful resource from an English language learning point of view for sharing experiences and tastes in music and developing conversations around them.

#FightRacism

Racism and racial discrimination take many forms and impact all aspects of life. Racism harms not just the lives of those who endure it but also society as a whole.

This UN campaign is a global call for concrete action against racism, xenophobia and related intolerance. Through it you can find a lot of materials about these discriminations and its social impact. Education is a fundamental tool to prevent them and to make them visible to new generations.

International Day of Persons with Disabilities

The annual observance of the International Day of Disabled Persons was proclaimed in 1992, by the United Nations General Assembly resolution 47/3.

The observance of the Day aims to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilize support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities. It also seeks to increase awareness of gains to be derived from the integration of persons with disabilities in every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life.

In this blog post I would like to present a resource from the Smithsonian in which, through the cases of some people with disabilities, their contributions throughout history are made visible.

The EveryBody: An Artifact History of Disability website is dedicated to raising awareness and sensitivity about disability through a look at the history of disability in the United States
