Managing the Lesson

This booklet helps teachers identify areas for development and provide ways to improve their knowledge and develop the skills they need in and out of the classroom. Teacher educators can use the materials with developing teachers to help assess and address their learning needs.

Teachers can explore lesson management skills, including:
  • how to use the classroom space and classroom equipment
  • putting learners into different groups
  • giving clear instructions and checking that learners have understood

The booklet also includes how to manage learner behaviour and how to respond to what’s happening in the classroom by making small changes to the lesson plan. Finally, teachers are encouraged to think about decisions after the lesson and use that experience to improve ideas and techniques for future lessons.

An Introduction to Design Thinking

Design thinking refers to the cognitive, strategic and practical processes by which design concepts (proposals for new products, buildings, machines, etc.) are developed by designers and/or design teams.

Many of the key concepts and aspects of design thinking have been identified through studies, across different design domains, of design cognition and design activity in both laboratory and natural contexts. Currently there is a growing interest towards Design Thinking as applied in education.

This guide is an introduction to Design Thinking provided by the Institute of Design at Stanford:

Christmas Time

When the Puritans banned Christmas

In 1659 the Puritan government of the Massachusetts Bay Colony banned Christmas. This religious minority considered that such celebration was unnecessary and that it distracted from religious discipline as the daily celebrations often led to drunkenness, promiscuity, gambling and other forms of excess. They also felt that celebrating Christmas would be idolatry due to this holiday's pagan origins.

DeepGrammar

DeepGrammar is a grammar checker that integrates deep symbolic processing and deep learning (artificial neural networks). It uses deep learning to learn a model of language, and it then uses this model to check text for errors in three steps:

- Compute the likelihood that someone would have intended to write the text.
- Attempt to generate text that is close to the written text but is more likely.
- If such text is found, show it to the user as a possible correction.

The following page demonstrates a prototype of DeepGrammar.

Grammar Gamble

Grammar Gamble is aimed at Intermediate English learners, although all learners will enjoy it. (Source Grammar Gamble).
